I've been having issues with the provided router and would like to use my pre-existing router. What is necessary for me to accomplish this? I've attempted to replace the provided unit and was unable to obtain a DHCP lease. Would it be possible to replace the GPON, too, with an appropriate SFP module in an available port?

Hi, Patrick. We would be happy to try and see if you can use your own router. I will forward your question over to one of our technical support team members, and have him reach out to you. He will be able to provide you with answers to those questions. Thank you for being a Gibson Connect subscriber!

I am curious to why the woodland mills area is being connected prior to the newbern area when newbern reached their goal 3 months prior to woodland mills ? Any update on when newbern will be connected ? The estimate was by summer/fall of this year yet it states that it has not yet been initiated ?

Hi, Jennifer. Yours is a good question. We are applying for grants at every opportunity to hold down the cost of the buildout for you and our other member-owners. We received a grant for the Woodland Mills area that required us to complete that work by a certain date. We know that you need our service and we expect the Newbern zone to be under construction by the beginning of July. Please keep in mind that there are variables like weather and staffing issues that could delay us, but we provide this essential service to you as quickly as we can. We are sorry for the wait and we look forward to serving you!

I am curious what is the status on Walter Whipple Rd. It appears that my neighbors three houses up the road are connected. I thought we were supposed to be connected before the end of 2020 under the grant for the Woodland Mills Zone? There were people running around here like crazy in October, November, and December. I haven't seen a truck around here in several weeks. What is the deal? Why am I not hooked up?

Is there anything being done in Rives yet?

User Avatar

12:27PM February 09, 2021

Sarah Williams
Hi, Dennis. The Union City/Rives zone has not yet reached its goal, so construction has not yet begun in this area. Currently, the zone is at 78% of its goal, with 96 more registrants needed. We ultimately plan to offer this service to all of our eligible members, but we are allowing them to help drive the order of the buildout by signing up and meeting their goals. In addition to this, we are applying for grants to help keep costs down for our members. You can check your zones status at any time by vising the "Zones" tab on this site. Thank you for your support of Gibson Connect!

I am also curious about the time-line for the Troy zone. I completely understand the reason behind the participation goals and using that as a guide to decide the order of build-outs. It appears that most zones have reached the goals needed and those zone that have not yet reached the goal are very close to doing so. I signed up for this back in 2017 and I had hoped that by now we would be much closer to having this service than we are. Troy reached its goal in July of 2020, same time as Woodland Mills - but Woodland Mills zone is nearing completion and Troy zone (according to this website) hasn't even been scheduled for engineering yet. I understand this is a MAJOR project and very expensive I am sure. I am no rocket scientist, but in my feeble opinion - the faster folks are hooked up, the faster Gibson Connect can start getting a return on the investment. I also fully believe that once service is available in an area, households that might not have signed up for the service initially will get on board with the service from Gibson Connect and therefore boost the investment return. My point being - maybe additional contractors to get this completed faster could not only get the build-out done, but allow Gibson Connect to start recouping costs faster.

Hi, Ken. We plan to begin work in the Troy Zone early fall. As we pass homes and businesses we will connect them. We expect to have registered members connected by late spring of 2022. We have applied for available grants to help hold down the cost of the fiber network buildout. We were awarded a grant for the Woodland Mills area that required it be completed before the end of 2020. We did bring in extra contractors to help with this work. In fact, we regularly bring in additional contractors as personnel and materials are available. However, we only want to bring in contractors that will do quality work. We agree that it is to everyone’s advantage that we complete the buildout and provide this important service as quickly as possible. Please know that we are doing our absolute best to push the project forward. Please continue to be patient; it will be well worth the wait.

Hi, Debra. At this time, we plan to begin construction in the Troy zone in the early fall, with connections completed by the spring of 2022. Please keep in mind, however, that the weather, the pandemic, and other factors could cause delays. We are working as quickly as possible to bring this service to all of our eligible members. Sarah, Thanks for the reply, but is it possible to tell the Newbern registrants some sort estimated timetable for the Newbern zone? Surely we are not looking at mid-2023......you may have run my line 6 feet underground if that's the case.

The timeline seems to be getting pushed back ( obviously a lot of things factor into that) . I was originally told that Newbern would be installed in the fall of this year. That was just a month or two ago. Now they're saying end of year. Looks like it's going to be a while. And it does seem newbern got jumped on the priority list (I'm sure a lot of factors there as well). Not complaining just speculating and dreaming of one day having modern internet.....

User Avatar

Hi, Bill, we're working on an email update to you and our other registrants. Our plan, if all goes well, is to get Newbern connected by the end of this year or the first part of 2022. Please keep in mind, however, that the weather, the pandemic, and other factors could cause delays. We are moving as quickly as we can, so please continue to be patient with us. You will love the service when we can get you connected.

User Avatar

I have noticed that some zones that finished their registrations after Newbern are getting service before Newbern. So where exactly does Newbern fall in the line? We can't assume that just because we fall next in line on the list that we will be next to get service, right? Just trying to figure out where we stand.....

First, thank you for registering for Gibson Connect’s service and for your question. The order in which zones meet their participation goals is still important to the order of our broadband buildout, but there are other factors, such as grant requirements, as well as engineering considerations and available resources that also are influencing the order of construction. We are aggressively applying for grants at every opportunity to help hold down our costs. The buildout is an enormous, time-intensive and costly project, so we are taking advantage of every option available to control our costs and build our broadband network as affordably as possible. These grants have various requirements including time frames within which certain areas must be built. Also, there are engineering and resource considerations that can affect the order of our build. We are managing all of these pieces of the puzzle to most economically and efficiently complete the fiber network buildout. Ultimately, we plan to provide access to all our members who are eligible. At this point, our best estimate for completion is mid-2023; but we know that you and our other members need this essential service ASAP and we are pushing the project forward as fast as we can. We are working on updates to our registrants now and will provide you with more information soon. Please watch your email for the update. Thank you for your continued support of Gibson Connect!

They are working their way through Troy now! My parents just had their internet installed yesterday and they live on the southwest side of Troy. The installers told them it should take about a week or two to make their way over to where we are, edge of Troy/Rives on the southeast side.
